Mr. Arturo J. Denis, Director of Bands

Mr. Arturo Denis

 

Arturo Denis is the Director of Bands at Creekview High School in Carrollton Farmers-Branch ISD. His responsibilities include direction of the Creekview Wind Symphony and the Creekview Marching Band and Advanced Jazz Ensemble. He is currently a Collegeboard AP Reader, TMEA Region XXIV 5A Varsity Band Coordinator, and Past Region XXIV Jazz Chair.

 

Previously Mr. Denis was Wakeland High School’s first Associate Director of Bands, where he conducted the Symphonic Band, and Jazz Ensemble 1, assisted with the Marching Band, including all aspects of the music program and was the AP Music Theory Instructor. While at Wakeland HS, the Wind Symphony was a three-time TMEA State Honor Band Finalist and a three-time finalist in the UIL State Marching Band Contest. Mr. Denis’ Symphonic Bands have consistently earned UIL Sweepstakes Awards, including receiving Superior Ratings in Marching, Concert, and Sight-reading Contests since 2007. As Region Jazz Chair he hosted the All Region Jazz Auditions, Clinic and Concert attracting educators such as Steve Wiest, Ronnie Rios, Kris Berg, Mike Steinel, Tim Ishii and Joe Eckert. Under his direction, the Jazz Ensembles have been presented the “Outstanding Band Award” by the Collin County Community College Jazz Festival. Additionally, the Jazz Ensemble won the AAA Classification of the 2008 Texas Christian University Jazz Festival and has placed in the top 5 finalist bands at the UTA Jazz Festivals. Prior to, Mr. Denis served as Assistant Band Director at Clark Middle School in Frisco alongside David Dunham.

 

Mr. Denis attended The University of Texas at Austin earning a Bachelors Degree in Music Education. While studying at Texas, he was part of several organizations including Delta Sigma Phi, and the Longhorn Marching Band where he received an award for Most Outstanding Musician. As a member of the “Showband of the Southwest”, Mr. Denis was a Trumpet Section Leader and a Trumpet soloist for the Longhorn Band. He was also a member of the esteemed University of Texas Wind Ensemble under the direction of artistic conductor Jerry F. Junkin. Mr. Denis is a member of the Texas Bandmasters Association, the Texas Music Educators Association and Phi Mu Alpha.

 

Mr. and Mrs. Denis Reside in Frisco, Texas. His wife Jenny Denis, is a band director at Fowler Middle School in Frisco. Together, they have a daughter named Rebecca and two Chihuauas named Tico and Bruno.

Mr. Maxwell Atkinson, Associate Director

 

Maxwell Atkinson is the Associate Director at Creekview High School. He is a graduate of the University of North Texas. He was a student teacher at Creekview and Blalack Middle School prior to his appointment.

 

While at the University of North Texas, Mr. Atkinson studied euphonium under Dr. Brian Bowman and Dr. Patrick Nyren. Mr. Atkinson also marched in the Green Brigade marching band for four years, serving as section leader, marching technician, and eventually drum major. He also participated in the University of North Texas Concert band under the baton of Dr. Nicholas Enrico Williams, NT Tuba-Euphonium ensembles under Dr. Brian Bowman, and various chamber ensembles. Outside of UNT, Mr. Atkinson marched for three years at The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle corps, earning the “Rookie of the Year” award in 2011 and serving as Horn Sergeant in 2013. Mr. Atkinson teaches with the Cavaliers and has taught the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corp and various other marching bands in the Dallas area.

 


Mr. Atkinson is a member of Texas Music Educators Association, NTTEA, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Mr. Matt Neal, Percussion Director

 

Matt Neal

 

Matt Neal is currently the percussion director at Creekview High School in Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD. He coordinates all aspects of the high school percussion program, as well as instruction of the beginning percussion classes, middle school percussion sections and percussion ensembles. Mr. Neal held the same position at Rockwall-Heath High School in Rockwall, Texas, for the 2012-2013 school year and North Lamar High School in Paris, Texas, from 2005-2012. Mr. Neal’s students have been recognized at the state and national level in all areas of performance, including concert and marching percussion ensemble, and in their solo endeavors.

 

Since 2004 Mr. Neal has been a percussion instructor and the music coordinator for the Red River Drum and Auxiliary Camp, an annual summer camp providing instruction for marching percussion, color guard and drum majors. It is one of the largest and most successful summer camps of its kind in the country. From 2007 to 2010 Mr. Neal was the percussion arranger/writer for the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Marching Band in Durant, Oklahoma.

 

Mr. Neal graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, Oklahoma, with a degree in Instrumental Music Performance in 2003. Following his time at SOSU, he earned a Master’s degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in Percussion Performance in 2005. Mr. Neal currently resides in Dallas, Texas with his wife Angela, an Orff specialist and the elementary music teacher for Rockbrook Elementary in Lewisville, Texas.

Mr. Drew Plott, Color Guard Director

 

Drew Plott

 

Drew Plott is currently the color guard director at Creekview High School in Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD. He began his color guard career in 2007 as a performer in the Plano Senior High School Winterguard. Since then, he has performed in White Gold IO Winterguard, the Dallas Cowboys Colorguard, and Black Gold IW Winterguard. He was a member of the rifle line when Black Gold made finals for the first time in 2015.

 

In addition to being a director, Mr. Plott has been involved in many programs in the state as a choreographer and a technician. These programs include The Colony High School, Little Elm High School, Highland Park High School, and several schools in the Texas panhandle. His work as an instructor has lead to his students receiving scholarships from the North Texas Colorguard Association, as well as continuing their dance careers after high school as marching members in independent color guards.

 

While attending West Texas A&M University, Mr. Plott became a member of Phi Mu Alpha and marched three years in the Buffalo Marching Band, including serving as color guard captain in 2009. He graduated in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Composition. Since then, he enjoys keeping his musical skills in shape by performing in local musicals as a woodwind doubler.
